Georgette Heyer was a towering figure in historical romance, especially Regency romances. Also a successful author of detective fiction, Heyer was born in Wimbledon, England in 1902. . Her family lived in Paris when she was young, and moved back to England soon after the start of World War I in 1914. Her debut novel, The Black Moth, based on stories she had created to entertain her ill brother, was published in 1921. Heyer eventually published dozens of her extremely popular romances and thriller novels. Highly committed to accuracy and detail, Heyer conducted extensive research and owned thousands of reference books. Though she was ignored by critics, Heyer's books found hordes of enthusiastic readers both during her lifetime and since her death in 1974.
