A BOOK THAT SOARS

This is a very good book on the jets involved in World War II. Nine planes are examined. We have from Germany: the Messerschmitt 262, Messerschmitt 163, Arado 234, Heinkel 162 and the Bachem Ba 349 Natter. We have from Great Britain the Gloster Meteor and from Japan the Yokosuka Ohka. From the USA, we have the Ryan FR-1 Fireball and the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star. The text is well written covering their development, use in the war and place in history. There are quotes from pilots who flew the jets. A ME 262 pilot says "I closed on them rapidly from behind but when I got to about 550 yards the mustang leader started to rock his wings and I knew I had been seen. So I loosed off my 24 R4M rockets, into the middle of them." There are quotes from the pilots who fought them. For example, from a Spitfire pilot who said: "I got on the tail of the ME 262 following it down to the ground, firing whenever I could get my sight on the aircraft...The aircraft was extremely manoeuvrable. The pilot was hot and put the aircraft through everything in the book..." The book has plenty of b/w photos and diagrams of the planes. The WWII fighting jets, if the title interests you, the book will not disappoint you.
