Great coffee table book

In the 10 yrs between 1492 - 1502, Christopher Columbus made four voyages from Spain to the Americas. On each voyage there was an exchange of plants and animals that linked the New World to the Old World. Potatoes, chocolate, hot peppers, corn, tomatoes and turkeys were brought to Europe. Cattle horses, sheep, sugar cane, coffee, olives, wine grapes, citrus fruits and wheat came to the Americas. The plants and animals of the Americas spread throughout the world. At the same time, European, African an Asian plants and animals circulated throughout the Americas. The process changed the way everyone on the planet ate and in so doing altered the history of the world in ways you might never imagine. The potato allowed a population explosion that gave a few small countries in northern Europe the workers that were needded for the industrial revolution, whch allowed these nations to dominate the world for over 200 years. Cattle changed the surface of the wesstern hemispere and made many of the inhabitants of North America the best fed people in the world - a fact that produced more immigration than the desire for either religious or political freedom. The sugar plantations of the Caribbean became the basis for international capitalism. These are only three of the hundreds of stories that are told in the in the 13 part public television series "What We Eat". The programs were written and presented by Burt Wold and funded by ConAgra Foods, Inc. This book is based on the original shooting script of the series. It will give you an understanding of not only what we eat but why and, in the process, alter your vision of our foods - you may never look at a meal in quite the same. The artwork and photographs are excellent
