Great history of women's tennis

Billie Jean King and Cynthia Starr do a great job of researching the history of women's tennis. Anecdotes on early stars like Lottie Dodd, Dorthea Lambert, and Suzanne Lenglen are particularly interesting. Along the way we see how different personalities like Helen Wills, Little Mo, and the beautiful Maria Bueno shaped the game. The section on the early days of open tennis is my favorite part of the book. Seeing how women like King, Rosie Casals, and the great baseliner Nancy Richey struggled to establish their own tour in the early '70s - going as far as holding signs on the road to advertise a tournament - is especially touching. This book should be required reading for today's divas like Martina Hingis and the Williams sisters who seem unaware of what their predecessors went through to make the game what it is today.
