WE learned lots! It's great!

When we first began the program, we found The Shurley Method's Student textbook format difficult to follow. Also, there are no pretty or fun pictures and I thought it would bore my son. Also, the binding began to come apart in both books early in the year. But within a small amount of time we got acquainted with the program and we BOTH learned SO MUCH. It comes with a jingle CD which helped my son memorize and learn the different parts of speech with ease. At the end of 3rd grade, he not only can identify nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions and article adjectives, but also a prepositions, object of the preposition, helping verbs, verb-transitive, personal pronoun adjectives and nouns, direct objects and more. He also can tell if the sentence is an interrogative, declarative, explanatory and imperative. Plus every week there is journaling, paragraph and essay writing assignments in persuasive, informative and narrative formats. Not to mention learning verb tenses, States abbreviations and information, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, contractions, complete/incomplete sentences, capitalization and punctuation, parts of a book and more! I had no idea my son would learn so much and really get to understand these things. It does require the parent to read a script about 3 times a week to teach the child - but you will be amazed what YOU learn too! Weekly there is a test. There is a lot of repetition each week on what was learned from previous weeks, so he never seems to forget what was taught. That way, it keeps his new-found skills sharp. When I asked my son if HE liked the curriculum, he had a resounding YES. He really likes it because he has seen his progress. He doesn't really seem to care for the bells and whistles of fancy pictures. Overall, I am very pleased with what my son learned this year through this program. I only wished the Student workbook was in a more user friendly format and had some fun pictures here and there, and the binding was better, but I do plan to continue with this program next year for him.
