An excellent book, but a little scary . . .

This book was one of my all time favorites while growing up. It details the story of a young scientist who is living on a bizarre but colorful world. There is a mystery that needs solving there and the writing brings to life the fears and senses that the heroine must endure. The book has a bit of scary (but non-violent) creatures, but I would still recomend it a an excellent read. I still enjoy it today as an adult. I recomend ages 11 and up.

Wonderful, warm, but exciting and Stimulating

I also picked this book up first in my early teens, and I cannot recommend it more highly -- I would give it six or seven stars if I could. Ever read a quiet little book that turned out to be one of the better reading experiences that you've ever had? This is one of them. The relationships are touching and the science is sound and it focuses on the human being even while casting the story in an alien world. Please, take a chance on this book -- I very highly doubt you will be disappointed.

Inspiring adventure

This was my favorite book in the world when I was 12 years old. Young Karen Orlov is orphaned on an unexplored planet and is rescued by biologist Theo Leslie. Together, they encounter a natural disaster unlike any that humans have faced before. Unlike many book characters, however, they use logic and careful observation (the underpinnings of science) to solve their predicament. As a young reader, I came away from this book with optimism that adversity could be overcome, appreciation of the scientific method, and confidence in myself as a young woman.A great read!
