Ghost writers speak

This 2006 reprint of editor Richard Dalby's THE GIANT BOOK OF GHOST STORIES is at least several hundred pages shy of actual enormity. The sampled authors include only a handful of names more familiar to the general reader (Dickens, Stowe, James and Stoker); all here were active in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In those times, short stories were often read aloud beside the family hearth. Many writers (like Charles Dickens) gave public readings to appreciative audiences of their latest creations. And perhaps that's the best way to enjoy these 30 venerable works-- as a listener. Some written words demand a hearing; ghost stories shared in an atmosphere of mystery and wonder are filled with exactly such words. Try dimming the lights some cool autumn evening, keep a candle at hand and read from this collection to your kith and kin. You will all be experiencing a unique and sadly, almost forgotten tradition: the bonding that occurs between an author, his surrogate voice, and the magically transported auditor. The 30 short horror stories in NURSERY CRIMES span a significantly wider era of publication.
