The Doctors: Colonial Americans

ISBN 0531010279 - From the Colonial Americans series, The Doctors is more educational than entertaining, filled primarily with dry facts. This makes it a great reference tool for reports, just not a terribly interesting read. Detailing the history of medical care in America, from the very beginning to about the end of the Revolutionary War, The Doctors includes some odd (to current day readers) treatments, such as bleeding patients and treating ailments with foods that resemble the source of the problem - headaches, in the brain, are treated with walnuts, for example. That, for years, medical doctors did not require any education or license will surprise young readers, as well. Only 47 pages long and with a full-page illustration on almost every other page, this is not a hard book to get through. Although it was written in 1968, the information inside doesn't become dated. Suitable for ages 10 and up, perfect for school reports.
