Very interesting historical account

After reading the prior review, I disagree with only giving this book 2 stars. I agree that the book is not to be used for reference, as that is not what the purpose is. The reason for this book is to entertain the reader and give a little personal insight into the Civil War and that time period from the people who actually lived it. It is to provide a glimpse of what the thoughts, feelings, and day-to-day sruggles were like for each different group of people. The writings of the soldiers, both of the Union and Confederacy, their families, the African-American soldiers and slaves, and those that were otherwise deeply affected can assist current readers in dealing with the difficult times of war that we are currently in. The way war is fought has changed significantly, however, Americans and their resilient nature and the fears and dreams of all involved have not. The ideals that helped found this country and the Americans who believe in those ideals are just as willing to die for their country as they were centuries ago. I found this book to be a great comfort to know that people years ago felt the same as I do about the current situation of our Union. As I stated, this is not a reference book, however, it is a reference source for those seeking intimate knowledge of war and how others have dealt with the events and outcomes. It has assisted me in dealing with the knowledge that loved ones may never return, but that they are willing to pay the ultimate price for something our ancestors started with the signing of our Declaration of Independence. I have been able to see how those that suffered did in fact succeed in their goal to create a "more perfect Union" and I truly appreciate them for their sacrifice. Finally, I can see through reading this that the sacrifices our soldiers are making today are for the ultimate American ideal of Freedom and I appreciate them more now than ever before.
