Roses at their best

A charming book, ideal as a gift, and packed with beautiful colour photos of every type of rose imaginable. Sylvie Girard writes lyrically about the symbolism and importance of roses, including lots of fascinating stories and anecdotes from well-known figures who share her passion. She traces the history of roses from the flower-strewn banquets of Roman times through the time of the crusades, the wars of the Roses and the French revolution to their modern-day use by couturiers and designers. She is particularly good at on the subject of the rose in literature and afficionados such as Colette, Lewis Carroll and Keats are quoted liberally throughout the text. There's a really interesting chapter on the use of roses in cooking, with recipes for rose syllabub, rose tea and rose punch. Dozens of different varieties of rose are lovingly described, as is the art of the `nouveaux' florists, accompanied by pictures of their stunning bouquets. The final section of the book contains useful information about the best Rose gardens, florists, nurseries and foodshops throughout the world. A great buy!
