"The chain letter returned like a curse."

Even though the Caretaker (Neil Hurly) died in the previous book, the remaining six high school graduates--except for Alison Parker--start receiving the same kind of chain letter from someone who claims to be the Caretaker. Again, most everyone thinks it's someone playing a sick joke. But when two of them are brutally killed because they refused to follow the Caretaker's orders, the remaining friends are in a hurry to unmask the identity of the killer before s/he has a chance to kill again. (The identity of the Caretaker is relatively easy to guess because of some of the clues and added characters.)"The Ancient Evil" is more of a supernatural horror book than "Chain Letter," involving things like the occult/Satanism, which the other book had none of. The Caretaker's instructions in this book are a lot more violent, too--like drown your puppy, burn your sister's arm, and cut off your finger. Because of these things, "The Ancient Evil" is a little better than the first, in my opinion. Plus this book answers some of the questions about the man in the desert they accidentally killed. The ending here is also more up to Pike's style than how the first "Chain Letter" ended. This is definitely a must-read if you read and enjoyed the first book in this series.

A very successful sequel!

Alison Parker,Kipp Coughlan, Brenda Paxson, Joan Zuchlensky, Tony Hunt, and Fran Darey are once again threatened by a mysterious force sending the anonymous chain letters. The trouble starts when Tony and Alison fight about whether Alison's going to NYU or not. Tony meets a new friend in the mall and gets her number. Later, that night, he calls her and they go over her house and hide. Alison and a unknown boy are together and, like many misunderstandings, Tony gets pissed. Suddenly all hell breaks loose, and two more teens in the group are killed horribly. Alison breaks the evil chain with her everlasting love and kind heart. But to find out the gory details, read the book.

Blood and gore all the way!

Exellent book! My favorite by Pike. I loved the character Sasha, she was pure evil. My favorite part was when Fran got decapitated. That was the best. The ending, I thought, was kind of corny, with Tony carring Alison in his arms, but it was still good. Pike should write more books like that. Too bad there wasn't a third book in the series...

Very suspenseful and itsy-bitsy romantic

This is a VERY good book. It's about a chain letter(like, DUH) telling a group of friends to do mean, semi-illegal things. Allison, the central character must find who's sending the group these things, since, previously, they thought they had already found out who did this. BOY, were they wrong! Allison must stop the person before she's "in the box," because "once she's in it, it's almost impossible to get out." This book was really full of those "wise sayings." Read to find out what happens (obviously a good ending). Qian L.

Facinating yet sad

This book was a great sequal to the first one. It was so well-written that I felt like I was part of the book, especially in Alison and Tony's argument at the beginging and at the final "blow-out" ending. If I was in the book, I would have hated Sasha and trusted Eric, just like Alison. The ways that Kipp and Fran died were gory, but they went good with the story. The only thing I didn't like was the cliff-hanging ending where you don't know if she lives or dies
