Terrific Resource

As a social work professor for 11 years, I assigned Dr. Kaiser's book, Supervisory Relationships, as a standard text for a clinical supervision and program management, masters-level course. She does a masterful job of discussing the relationship dynamics in the supervisory dyad, while paying attention to both the supervisee's professional development and agency expectations: compassion and accountability. The overriding goal is high quality, ethical service to clients. Consistently, my students found this book to be the most useful in the course. I recommend this book to beginning and experienced clinicians, new and seasoned supervisors.

Required Reading for Supervisors

I have used this book as a professional reference for my work and as a textbook with practitioners and students. It is solidly grounded in relational ethics and research. Its multicultural examples are based on research and well integrated into the topical headings of the book. Few books dedicate this kind of attention to the relationship between supervisor and supervisee. It works well with other kinds of texts that address the managerial dimensions of supervision. The concept of shared meaning is particularly useful in identifying where things can go wrong in the supervisory relationship and to how understand and address them. Every supervisor and supervisee should have and use this resource.

Wonderful Resource

This book is beneficial for any clinician who supervises trainees or supervisees in the field of social work. Because of the authors' experience and expertise, it is efficient to use as either a practical resource or as a textbook, and it lends itself well to a multi-disciplinary environment. The information is both practical and useful. Recommended highly for practitioners looking to offer high quality supervision to others.
