Great book

Schildt writes books that help programmers get the job done. I first moved from assembly to C programming with the help of his books in the late 80's, and this book continues to show why he's a best selling author. This is not a reference and it is not an in-depth guide to all of STL programming. STL Programming from the Ground Up is an introduction to STL programming for those who want to start working with the STL quickly. If I had do say one negative thing, it's only that I would have preferred more material. I would love to see an expanded version or an 'Advanced STL programming' by Mr. Schildt. Other technical writers could help us all if they studied his writing style.

Good book for beginning STL

Good book for those wishing to learn STL. STL can be a very complex topic and reading one book on STL will not make you an expert. So if you don't want a book that is too complicated and want to get a quick jump start into STL, this is a good one to read. It's a good starting book to help you transition into more complex books on the STL topic.

If you want to know STL and you know C++ then this book you.

If you've got problems to solve and you think STL can help you, then this book is for you. I've read the STL documentation that comes with my Compiler (its terrible). I've read Nelson's "The C++ Programmers Guide to STL (It's complete but too complicated). I don't really care why STL works I just want to use it and I think this book is great. It's full of easy to understand examples, clear and concise explanations of terms. I was really interested in learning about how to use the deque to store classes and the first example is on page 79. I think it's a great book and I'd strongly recommend it and I want to thank those of you who already recommended it because that's why I bought it in the first place.

Great book on the STL

Having stuggled through several excellent books on the STL (Stroustrup, Glass, Nelson etc) I was left with the rather disconcerting feeling that I simply didn't "get it." I got the best insight from Nelson's book (which I would also highly recommend), but in this book, Schildt really made the light come on.Assuming you are already up to speed with pre-ANSI C++, you will find this book an excellent read. Also, the organization of the book means that it becomes a very good reference after you have finished reading it. Great book.
