Read it so many times, it's fallen apart!

Anyone who has or loves a special needs child of any diagnosis will be touched by Chris's amazing story of love and tenacity. I first bought this book over 15 years ago when it came out, and I'm thrilled to know it's still around because I will be buying another copy to replace the one I have that's in tatters from being read so many times! Without giving anything away, I'll say that Chris's Down Syndrome (back in the '60s, when early death and lack of development were expected) is only the tip of the iceburg for his family. This story is the inspiring, tear-jerking, moving, and even amusing, at times, story of the Burke family, their obvious love for each other, their very deep faith and resilience, and victory over adversities that would break most of us. I read this before and after my son's autism diagnosis and had already been through a lifetime of my own medical trials, but each time I have read it, I've gained more from it. I will also say that they're "real." At one point, after several family tragedies, Chris's mother, Marian, looked up at the sky and said, "Okay, God. This family has had enough..." but of course, they continued on, as anyone with similar circumstances realizes is necessary, without the bitterness and cynicism that is so often the norm. If you are dealing with your own personal crisis and need encouragement or just want to read an excellent book about an awesome family, please pick this up. Once you do, I guarantee you won't want to put it down!

Fulfilled Dream Come True

This was particularly special for me to read, as Chris Burke was one person who fulfilled a life long dream of mine. I championed for children who were "differently abled" to be treated like everyone else. I was only 11 & 12 years old when I believed that with love, understanding & perseverence, those with "Up Syndrome" could succeed in life, if given the chance. Chris was one whose family allowed him to grow & believe in himself, to follow his dreams, & I must say, "Chris, you are MY hero! I am so happy that I accidently found out about this wonderful book. It touched my heart, & I recommend it highly, for those wanting to read & experience through words, a true success story, & how all of us can beat the odds, if we believe.

An Inspiration!

This book was recommended to me because I am the parent of a special child. I have since recommended the book to all of my friends, whether they have special children (or any children) or not. Chris Burke's story is remarkable. He beat all the odds and achieved more than most of us could ever dream. This is clearly because of his wonderfully supportive family, who never told him he couldn't succeed. Moreover, Chris has a great sense of humor, making the book a joy to read. Well done Chris!

inspiring read for everyone

Chris Burke is one of my favorite actors. I started watching Life Goes On back in 1989 through 1993. It is still my favorite all time show. I taped about half the episodes. ( I just wish i could find out where you can buy them...I'd love to have the whole show on tape) I had no idea how many obstacles, due to his condition of Down Syndrome, Chris had to overcome before becoming an actor. His faith in God and himself is so inspiring. Even his family tried to discourage him from thinking he was going to be a Hollywood star someday, but he obviously had a vision and stopped at nothing to achieve his dreams. I love that his disabilty is not his identity. He rises far above any trial. I also found out many interesing facts from his Life Goes On costars. He and Kellie Martin's friendship was so strong, they were like siblings. He sometimes had to deal with actors who thought they were above him and were very impatient and patronizing with Chris. Chris really is a "normal" person with normal desires- to fall in love, be treated with respect, make his own living, and take care of his loved ones. Whether or not you have seen his show or movies, I recommend you read this book, especially if you are disabled or know someone who is. You don't have to be afraid of someone who looks and sounds a bit different than you. Chris really changed my heart and mind. He has more wisdom than anyone I know. P.S.( afew months later) Hey Life Goes on fans, I just found out the first season of the show will be released in the summer of 2006! I can't wait to buy it. I hope they will release all four seasons.

VERY touching and heartwarming

I read this book last year in 7th grade. THe book fair came to our school and I had my money and I was read to buy something good. I went over to the shelf and as I went through the books this book caught my eye. I remembered that when I was really little we'd watch "Life Goes On" every week and I thought it was so cool for "someone like that" to be able to accomplish "all that" so I bought the book. As I read it I'd tell bits and pieces of the story ( my personal favorite is about the small pine tree growing in his...) they'd be hanging from a limb each day until I read more of the book-quarreling over who would borrow it from me first. Meanwhile all day I'd look at things from a simpler point of view thinking of how Chris might see this situation. (or one of my down-syndrome friends Sarah) It made me feel like, wow he had a HARD life and all of my formerly HUGE problems were like nothing. I could do ANYTHING it gave me a huge surge of power and confidence. It made me feel like me for the first time, making me feel like wow people care for each other, they really do. This is a VERY special book. touching deep parts of the soul unknown until this book is read, see for yourself..
