As subversive and noble as Johnny Gruelle's Raggedy Anne

As the other reviewers note, Tony Millionaire is a wildly talented artist. His beautiful pen and ink renderings stand head and shoulders above the computer generated rabble. His eye is unerring. His intrepid, old timey toy characters will appeal to everyone from Great Aunt Agatha to baby Florabelle and her elder brother, Handsome Pete. There's just so much wit and whimsy and given that he is the genius behind the unhinged adults-only Maakies strips that run in a but a fraction of the alternative newspapers that could and should be carrying his work, restraint. Sock Monkey is an absolute joy to read aloud. And who would've thought this old degenerate (see Maakies) could deliver such pure-hearted moral lessons? I get so damn sick of claptrap about little dinosaurs who have issues with sharing in their playgroup. Sock Monkey swashbuckles. Sock Monkey blows everything else out of the water. If you give a fig about children's literature, you will save the world a little bit by giving this book to every child of your acquaintance.

Imagination and classy humor.

Zounds! Tony Millionaire doing a Children's Book?! He's is one of my favorite cartoonist. I've been a fan of his not-for-kids comic The Maakies (and Sock Monkey) for a while, but I really didn't expect this out of him. Well, I say he pulled it off. Tony Millionaire suprises me once again. I would so do him.

I'm a MOM of a 5-year-old and I love to read it aloud

I bought this book to read to my son because I'd heard of Tony Millionaire- he's a cartoonist in our local alternative weekly and does two strips- Sock Monkey and Maakies. But this is him entering the children's book market for the first time and it's very cool.It has the feel of a Stuart Little-ish classic- like a min-chapter book with pen and ink drawings. You can read it over two or three bedtimes for best effect. The drawings are amazing- beautfiul, sweet, detailed- and Isaac loves to look at each picture as I turn the page. The writing appears to Isaac to be just a wonderful children's book, but as a fan of Tony Millionaire's adult work, I can pick up on the cool, inside vibe that gives parents rewards and chuckles as you read. My favorite kind of book- I don't zone out when I'm reading it to him!I love love love it. And there you have it.

The best illustrator...ever!

I thouroughly enjoyed the book, as did my 2 year old sister. She kept asking for "more Sock-a Monkey". Awesome.
