VIKINGS IN THE WEST??

Between Doubleday and University of Oklahoma, plus a couple Forge editions, I count 26 books by Dr. Coldsmith on my shelves. I see that I bought this February 2, 1995 and find it one of the most interesting of the lot. Allowing that the subject matter is entirely different, I see I made a note in this book that I had not found many books as interesting as this one since SHOGUN by Clavell. I read mostly on the west and for my taste Don Coldsmith never wrote a bad or uninteresting book. This book is somewhat atypical to the Spanish Bit Saga yet all the elements are present that are in the others so that this one can fit right in along side without sticking out. Combining 11th century Norsemen with native American Indians is a must read for me. Throw in a few longships and runestones and I'm almost ready to go 'a viking' myself. When I walked into our local bookstore back in '95 and saw the cover on this book and Don Coldsmith's name, I didn't think twice about buying and reading it. Nor should any reader yet today think twice about picking it up. The book will allow several hours of reading pleasure. Think of it as similar to Louis L'Amour's JUBAL SACKETT only set farther in location out west. Semper Fi.

Runestone

I started reading this at the hospital. They had a copy of it. I wanted to be able to finish it. Not too a book.

Vikings in the American midwest!...

Could this be a true story? Almost?This is a great historical account of something that may have actually happened. The runestone does exist. Noone knows how it got there.Coldsmith wrote an entire story around a possible explaination. And very nicely done I might add. It's a long book, but good reading. Slow at times, but never boring. You always want to find out what is going to happen next.He has left it open for a follow up book. Hopefully it will be forthcoming.Definitely worth a read.

Great book

Living in Oklahoma wherethe rune stone is located I was interested how Mr.Coldsmith would handel it. Although I am not that much an expert on the Norse way of life I did find it interesting the way he handel the story. To me it was believiable. I was a journey of self discovery to which he was trying to find his way back home. Only to find hewas already home. If you enjoy the Spanish Bit saga you will enjoy this book.

fun and suspenseful

its a don coldsmith book, so you already know its good. the allusions he makes to his earlier spanish-bit novels are always fun to recognize. the book was like all his other books: original, exciting, and hard to put down.
