Book Overview

It's tough being a man in the twenty-first century. First there are the big dilemmas, like how to get a raise. And there are all those things you ought to know: how to buy lingerie, how to make the perfect martini, how to tie a Windsor knot, how to propose to your girlfriend. The list is endless.

Fear not. The highly respected editor of GQ draws on his wealth of experience to give us the final answers.

Style updated and made funny

Sometimes image or style is equated with boredom and old fashioned (because normally general recommendations tend to stay in the "general average") on the contrary, Mr. Jones updates general fashion and behavior rules, present them in an accessible and very entertaining way, encouraging to and guiding on how, to put your own "twist"

All the Things your Father Didn't Teach You...

I recently finished reading Mr Jones' Rules for the Modern Man, a book that could have just as easily been titled All the Things your Father Didn't Teach You. That, incidentally, is not a criticism of my dad (or yours for that matter), because the book covers so much ground that you're bound to learn something useful, whether it's how to behave in a lap-dance club, how to carve a Christmas turkey, or how to tie a Windsor knot. Inevitably, there are some gaps. For example, the book's five pages on how to assemble an equity portfolio are unlikely to lead to instant riches (or replace your copy of The Intelligent Investor). There are some things -- such as an assertion that all shaving equipment is created equal -- with which I take exception. And some of the chapters digress into let-me-tell-you-about-the-fun-I-had-with-my-celebrity-buddies (including Hunter S. Thompson and Jeremy Clarkson) and are short on useful information. These quibbles aside, it's an entertaining read for any man interested in modern manners, or any woman interested in learning about how men think.
