objective and evenhanded account of FDR's foreign policy

Divine gives an objective account of Roosevelt's policies that lead up to the entrance of the United States into World War II. He goes far to discredit some of the Roosevelt mythology and assesses his policies from the view that Roosevelt was a man of his time, working within the framework of public opinion as well as his own opinions regarding a distaste for war and involvement in european crises. Although, Roosevelts actions were ultimately unsuccessful at preventing war and preventing post war antagonisms and aggression, his alternatives at the time were limited.
