Rediscover God in Washington

Rediscovering God in America by Speaker Newt Gingrich takes you on a guided tour through Washington D.C. This book will open your eyes to the evidence of God's vital role in America's founding and His influence on our governing principles. Throughout the book you will enjoy reading quotes from our past presidents, such as President John F. Kennedy's:: "The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.", and President Ronald Regan's: "Faith and religion play a critical role in the political life of our nation - and always have - and that the church - and by that I mean all churches, all denominations - have had a strong influence on the state." This would be a great book to take along on an actual tour of all our historical monuments.

Faith of the American Founding

This updated edition of Rediscovering God in America, featuring the photography of Callista Gingrich, is a great read and a perfect gift for anyone interested in history or the role of religion in American heritage. Written as a walking tour of the nation's capital but enjoyable anywhere, Rediscovering God in America addresses the popular misconception that our nation's founding was a uniquely secular event, isolated from the faith of the founders, and proves that the tradition of "separation of church and state"--a phrase found nowhere in any founding documents--has never required the absolute ban on references to faith in the public sphere. Readers might be surprised to learn that Thomas Jefferson, whose letter to the Danbury Baptists Association of Connecticut is considered the origin of the phrase, regularly attended church services in the Capitol chapel, including one service just a few days after he wrote that letter. The book catalogs dozens of examples of the importance of religion in our history and government institutions. This updated edition features the beautiful photography of Callista Gingrich for those who cannot make the trip to Washington for the walking tour. It complements the text perfectly and captures the inspiring feel of the capitol city. Photographs of the Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building, and Library of Congress are especially stirring. Rediscovering God in America is the perfect holiday gift for family and friends. Highly recommended. Also consider the two film documentaries, Rediscovering God in America and Rediscovering God in America II: Our Heritage.

A Great Walking Tour for DC

Newt Gingrich's "Rediscovering God In America" (2006, 160-page hardback) is a great walking personal tour book for finding Christianity in Washington DC's monuments and government buildings. The final 18 pages presents a walker's map of DC and over 40 photos of the book's locations. This is a great tour book. Speaker Gingrich describes the historical backgrounds, religious foundations, and architectural presentations for the National Archives, Washington Monuments, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Viet Nam Veterans Memorial, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, and much more. The author's research also offers interesting colloquial stories for each location. Gingrich is an intuitive and persuasive historian. Everyone visiting these sites will want to have this pocket-sized text with them. This book is recommended to all interested in America's religious foundation, our nation's capitol, government architecture, and those soon to tour Washington DC.

Timely and refreshing reminder of nation's theistic base

The secular left would like to silence all public religious expression ... unless it supports their left-wing causes. Thus, Democratic candidates routinely campaign from liberal pulpits, while conservative churches are attacked for allowing Republican candidates to appear. The secular left seeks a radical purging of politics from the pulpit, and of God from politics. However, that is not how our nation was founded. On the religious side, political sermons were common during the American Revolution. They were crucial for its success, providing much of the moral clarity required to sustain the long war for independence. See e.g. Ellis Sandoz, Political Sermons of the American Founding Era. On the political side, Newt Gingrich's book takes the reader back to monuments and documents that cannot be ignored. It is almost startling to read the strongly theistic public statements by our nation's "secular" founders. The book does an excellent job of highlighting those religious statements, and explaining their original significance. Our Founders did not simply refer to God as an accomodation to a religious culture. Instead, as the Speaker demonstrates, the Founders were ardent theists, who sought to bring God and faith directly into government. The most obvious example is the Declaration of Independence -- the entire legal basis for our new government. The Declaration makes no intellectual sense without Jefferson's argument about human rights coming from the Creator. A secularized Declaration is an incoherent document. Mr. Gingrich demonstrates this with interesting quotes from other Founders, who tracked and expanded upon Jefferson's argument. A highly recommended book in a day when the liberal elites are encouraging people of faith to withdraw from politics.

FAITH OF OUR FOUNDING FATHERS

"REDISCOVERING GOD IN AMERICA" IS A REFRESHING LOOK AT THE LIFES OF OUR FOUNDING FATHERS AND HOW MUCH OF A ROLE FAITH PLAYED IN THERE LIFES AND SHAPED THE DESTINY OF THIS NATION.I REALLY APPRIEATE SPEAKER GINGRICH WRITING THIS BOOK AND SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ABOUT OUR FOUNDERS CAUSE SOME CRITICS OUT THERE WOULD SUGGEST THAT OUR FORMER PATROTS WERE NOT MEN OF FAITH BUT THIS WELL RESEARCHED AND DOCUMENTED BOOK HAS FACTS THAT PROVE OTHER WISE THAT OUR FOUNDERS WERE INDEED MEN OF GREAT CHRISTIAN FAITH WHO STOOD FOR PRINCIPLES THAT MATTER THE MOST. THE WRITER OF THE BOOK HOLDS A PHD IN HISTORY AND TEACHS IN GA.
