Real

I bought this book on the uptown 4 train one day, along with his poetry book, because I was impressed by the author's rhetoric. As I begain reading, I realized that this was an intensely woven story; it kept my attention for the entire trip and I almost would have rather continued reading than attend my dinner function! I think this author is a strong testament to local talent.

Keep Righting

Met him last week on the Queens bound A train when I purchased his book and I felt compelled to inform him that although I have not completed it, I am enjoying it and was disappointed when I arrive at my train stop because that means I won't get to continue for 8 eight hours. It is genuinely the highlight of my train ride. (Which in itself is an oxymoron on a MTA train. lol?) Brad brings a lot to life and successfully accomplishes the often daunting task of making me care about the characters and what happens next in their lives. I couldn't help wondering how much of the book or the character Chucky was associated to his real life experiences. Also, since Mr. Ray is obviously an influential part of Chuck's life despite the fact that they're not related, I wonder who the Mr. Ray was in his life. Lastly, I also wanted you to know that usually small chapters annoy me; however, his was very effective. They allow the book to flow the way life does. There is an apparent love for New York in his writing. He passionately describes scenes and characteristics of city life (New York in particular) that often go unnoticed or unappreciated by New Yorkers who don't travel or take in their surroundings. I especially enjoy the suspicion elicit in Apple and Chuck's relationship. OK this turned out a lot longer than anticipated. Hope he enjoys the feedback and I wish him a life-time success.

Pretty Good

Pretty Ugly is definitely a raw, gritty, 'hood selection. It tells of the hustle and the grind. The deceit and the faithfulness. Loyalty and distrust certainly play major roles in this story of one trying to make good with what he got. If you need something to take your mind off all the noise on that train ride or something to kill the anxiety while waiting in the doctor's office, read Pretty Ugly!
