A veritable forest

If you have ever been fascinated by this traditional pattern, you must have this book for your library. You will get your money's worth and then some. Before she ever gets to the 15 projects and their step-by-step instructions, Lois gives a history of the block, shows 48 different variations, and provides basics instructions for hand or strip piecing, appliqué or foundation. There is also a Gallery of quilts, both old and new, providing additional inspiration. Finally, on page 43, we start the projects designed for the book. They range from the simple paper pieced tree made with long strips for each layer of branches to the eye-popping pieced tree with more than 40 triangles. Each pattern is clearly explained with excellent graphics and written instructions. Many of the projects are small, allowing you to try different trees without making a lifetime commitment.An extra bonus is the gorgeous quilting design that goes with Pine Star wallhanging, a classical beautiful combination of leaves, cones and swirls. It would make an equally impressive appliquéd border design.
