The Golden Rule is not new (Treat people as you would like to be treated) but many a company would benefit from rediscovering it. This book covers John's company and his mid-west-Jack-Welsh type approach. In it, he explains how he created a company that focuses on the right things using an empowered workforce. Short (161 small pages) and sweet, it is highly recommended for all team lead / new managers. Experienced managers will also enjoy the content but will most likely be familiar with many of the concepts. Just a few of the many quips in the book: Every person in a management role should be a leader. Don't cram philosophy down throats. Instead make sure people know before joining the team that they won't last if they don't fit. Leaders who allow renegades to mix things up are putting the integrity of the company at stake. A manager who is losing control of his team is losing touch with his team. Good management is 80% people orientation, 15% learned skills, 5% gut feel. Approach with a smile; lend an ear, not an eye. Trust supervisors to catch infractions. I do not know one good leader who stayed in his office. All good leaders must make an effort to interact with as many departments as possible. Think of your meetings as a quick information huddle up. As a manager you shouldn't be in a series of meetings, you should be working and meeting people.

Companies either fall in 1 of 2 catagories. They are either great at servicing their customers or great at taking care of their staff. Rarely do you find a company/individual who can do both well. Mr. McConnell is the only person who has proven he can do both very well. The book is so informative that you won't be able to put it down until you've finished it! Much of the information he provides in the book you'll find a way to apply it to your current position. In reading the book you'll want to work harder at just being a better person to everyone you meet.
