An Important and Epic Volume

Picking up from where One Piece, Vol. 24 leaves off, the Straw Hat crew continue their quest to reach the fabled sky island "Skypiea." They run into the one man who may be able to help them accomplish this task, but complications ensue and it's up to Luffy to set things right. Meanwhile, the ramifications of Sir Crocodile's attempted coup in Alabasta reach the heads of the World Government. This is an absolutely important volume in the One Piece saga - it's the first time readers are exposed to Oda's grander designs for his opus. The important leaders of the World Government are given names and faces, more of the Seven Warlords are introduced, and Shanks is on the move to meet up with the current greatest pirate in the world. Say what you will about One Piece and the conventions of the "Shonen Manga" genre, but Eiichiro Oda is fantastic for setting up events that won't pay off for another twenty volumes down the line and beyond. And that may not seem like a lot to American readers since we'll be getting all this in a matter of months thanks to the new accelerated publishing program - but anyone who followed the original Japanese release will know this took *years* to play out and was a true exercise in patience. But all of that only accounts for two chapters of this book, with the rest delivering more comedy, action, and adventure as the Straw Hat crew chase after giant birds, settle an old score with Bellamy the Hyena, and ride the ever-so-unfortunately-named "Knock Up Stream" to Skypiea. There really is no "fat" here to speak of, as the story moves along pretty quickly and efficiently. And just in case you think everything is moving along too conveniently, Usopp even hangs a lampshade on the subject at one point. Don't worry, it's all pretty sound logic for the One Piece world. The last thing I'd like to point out is that a major, long-term villain is revealed here, and one of his henchmen whom I thought would have his name changed for "correctness" actually gets away unscathed. You'll know it when you see it, and it's great Viz didn't take the "self-censoring" route here. Grab this volume and get ready for the next epic One Piece saga.
