Educational

Reviewed by Cayden Aures (age 4 1/2) and Mom for Reader Views (6/09) "Motherlove" is part of Dawn Publications' "Sharing Nature with Children" series. The book explores all of the different qualities of a mother and the ways they raise their young. Cayden: "I didn't know what a lot of the words meant in this book, but I liked learning about the animals. I liked learning that swans sit on their babies. The llama in the beginning of the book looks like Diego's llama. The picture of the otters was my favorite." Parent's comments: The book "Motherlove" by Virginia Knoll is written in bold text poetry form on the top of the page and then on the lower part of the page there are facts written about the animals. My son really didn't get into the poetry part as many of the words were over his head (although the ages listed on the back are 2 to 8). For instance one of the pages reads: "They're good at respecting, directing, protecting and teaching their offspring to fly. They separate hagglers and bring in the stragglers and know when (or not) to ask why." He did, however, enjoy the facts about the animals that were written in smaller type below. I also learned some new things!
