VERY INTERESTING MASQUERADE

This was a very interesting read. I totally agree with the other reviewer in that I don't agree with the woman masquerading as a boy, but she pulled it off better than most. The interplay with all of the characters was very well written. She really kept you hooked and reading to find out what was to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this period in England. My only complaint would be that the book could have been at least 100 pages less if some of the descriptions of all of the furniture in the rooms,the drapes, the ornamental vases and etc. was more at a minimun, I tend to skim some books if this is overdone.

An interesting and enjoyable read

I've never enjoyed reading about females masquerading as males because most females, in all reality, would never be able to pull it off convincingly. So I never purchase those kinds of books, and if one falls into my hands, it doesn't take long before I put it aside in favor of a more believable plot.This book, however, despite the disappointing masquerade, kept me interested. The author has quite a talent for writing dialogues. She manipulates words to create twisted misunderstandings in a manner that I have rarely seen before. I think it takes great skill to follow the machinations of so many characters' minds when each one is piecing together different information to form different conclusions in the way that the characters in this book do.My only complaint, aside from Averil masquerading as a boy, is that she makes a tremendously stupid error towards the end, which is not something I could understand since we'd previously seen that she was, in fact, a very intelligent character. I understood the need for dramatic conflict at that point in the story, however, and it didn't sway my opinion of the book very much at all.It was obvious from the beginning who the Tottman was, but it was interesting watching the characters come to that knowledge, so I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery.
