Moments of Truth brings together writings by Lorna Sage on twelve women writers (Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Jean Rhys, Christina Stead, Djuna Barnes, Violet Trefusis, Jane Bowles, Simone de Beauvoir, Christine Brooke-Rose, Iris Murdoch, and Angela Carter). She melds together biographical insights together with the soul of the writing, focusing on the 'moments of truth' when each writer found her voice. I had never heard of Christina Stead, but I know now that this is an author whose work I should like to read. As Sage was a friend of Angela Carter, the chapter on Carter enjoys a special immediacy. Sage was a talented wordsmith as well as an accomplished scholar. I found this not only enlightening, but also a very good read.
