SNOW STEPS UP

The fifth round of the War Games are set to begin between the members of Mar and the Chess Pieces. As the rounds have progressed, the Chess Pieces have been entering more and more powerful members to fight against our heroes. First up, probably the weakest member of Mar, Princess Snow, has to battle against Emokis, who, though gluttonous and disgusting, is actually one of the most powerful Bishops. Snow seems outclassed at first, but like all of Mar, she received some new Arms from Caldia, Dorothy's homeland, that might even things up a bit. Other members of Mar will also have to step up to the plate, especially Nanashi, who will have to face someone from his past. Wow, I can't believe that the War Games have been going on for 5 volumes and I still haven't gotten bored with this series yet. The beauty of Anzai's writing is somehow including exposition and dialogue during the chaos of fighting, but never in an intrusive way to ruin the flow of the scenes. Or he takes a sidetrip during a break from the War Games, like going to Caldia, to give the combatants time to rest and for the readers to get a bit of background. Also, you like the characters and care about what they are fighting for so you like to see them win in each battle and the ingenuity they have to use to figure out a way to victory. Anzai also gives the Chess Pieces some depth by not making them all totally evil. Some of them are misled, or delusional, or merely weak. Don't get me wrong, some of them also lust for power, or enjoy killing people. Will I be satisfied if this series continues along this bent ad infinitum? Probably not. But for now, I'm not bored and I really like it. Mar is good to read on a rainy day when you want to be entertained but don't want to strain your brain too much.
