Liberating and Scholarly Study

Micks explores the Nicene Creed by asking and exploring the following questions about the affirmations that make up the creed: Who is God? Who is Creator? Who is the Christ? What is Salvation? Who is God the Spirit? What is the Church? What is Baptism? What is Our Future? What difference does it make? A key point that Micks makes is that it is both normal and appropriate to question the words that we repeat in the creed - such questioning helps us to explore our faith and grow; to own what we believe, and understand how the creed itself links us to the communion of saints - past, present, and future. When I read the book by myself, I found it very enriching. However, when I attempted to use it as a study resource for a small group, it was difficult at best. A very advanced group, with a significant theological bent will likely find this book interesting and useful. Alternatively, it may be effective to alternate back and forth between Bible study and reading chapters of the book. It would be easy to select Bible passages that tie into the concepts that will be covered in the next chapter (or those that were covered in the last one).

Faith explained

Professor Micks breaks down the language of the ancient creed and puts it into our 21st century understanding. I understood for the first time that creation was not a one time event. The big bang and other scientific theory is not in opposition to theology. There is much more to treasue in this compact volume that outlines what WE as Christians believe. I highly recommned it to those who which to understand the Living Church.

Good Starting Point

This is a great book for studying the Nicean creed. I studied this book as a part of a Christian Theology class and it worked well in that context. I would also recommend use in a small group setting.
