Describes the daily life of pilgrims in the Middle Ages, analyzing why they went on pilgrimages and what they hoped to accomplish. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I was a medievalist myself and think this book does a nice job of giving a picture of overall life in Europe circa 1100-1400. High school readers (and we adults) should be quite interested in the details of how hotels and toilets worked (or failed to) in those days. And the topic, pilgrimages, gives a useful way into discussion of the important role of the church in everyone's life while allowing sidelights into the life of a farming serf, say. It's not an extremely scholarly job (sourcing is entirely to other secondary works, and those more in the Barbara Tuchman line), but it does quote the right medieval voices lifted from those other history books, and it's smoothly, cleanly written at a level appropriate for high schoolers. Too bad the pictures aren't in colour.
Well-written, clear and interesting

I have read a few of the books in this series, and the quality varies depending on the author. This is one of the good ones. The writing is very well-done, the flow of information is smooth, and the research, while evident, doesn't bury the entire book. The book stays focused on its main topic while offering interesting glimpses into the medieval world in general.
