The Good and the Disappointing.

Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is a story of the relationship between a student named Eiri and a ghost named Cossette. The story starts with Eiri obsessing about a girl he has never met, drawing her picture on a blank sheet of paper during class. After class he goes to his job at an antique store, where he discovers her portrait, which has already been sold, and he encounters her unhappy ghost in the darkness of the back room. She beseeches him to save her, and he overcomes his apprehensions and agrees. Cossette is sad because her former possessions are now cursed, and have caused death and injury to many people. The story becomes a treasure hunt to find her former possessions, studded with traps which lead to growth in the two characters. The story succeeded in getting me to identify with Eiri. That is good. The manga has many pages of just illustration, with little dialog or explication. That is confusing and echoes Eiri's confusion, which is good, but it is also irritating. I have seen the same in another manga that was originally an anime, and to see more of it is disappointing. So there it is, a story that is a mixture of good and disappointment.
