And These Are The Best and Brightest?!?

Leland Gregory, who has based a writing career on stupidity (STUPID CROOK BOOK, WHAT'S THE NUMBER FOR 911?, IDIOTS AT WORK, etc.) herein offers up 300 pages of political dimwits at work on the local, state and national levels. Warning: If you believe the best and brightest go into politics, you probably shouldn't read this book! IDIOTS IN CHARGE is chock full of stupid statements, dumb decisions, ego trips, childish tantrums, legislative pork, outright criminal behavior and everything in between; to wit: California Rep. Randy Cunningham - speaking of criminals in politics! - wanted a well-known celebrity to testify at a Congressional hearing on the importance of music education. He asked Elmo from Sesame Street! A South Carolina representative, during the course of a debate on madatory seat-belt usage, stated: "I never know what I am going to say until I say it, so I am kind of interested in hearing what I think." For a debate on bloated Pentagon budgets Dennis Kucinich - who just dropped out of the Presidential race - brought along pie charts to make his points. Unfortunately the debate was being aired on Public Radio! Dining at a restaurant, Tom DeLay lit up a stogie. When asked to put it out because federal regulations forbade smoking in a restaurant, DeLay modestly replied "I AM the federal government!" Talking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Hilary stated that "We have a lot of kids who don't know what 'work' means. They think 'work' is a four-letter word." A Georgia representative introduced a bill requiring grocery store owners to provide moistened sponges so baggers wouldn't have to lick their fingers to help them open the bag! And finally this December 2006 doubletalk bon mot from Dubba's National Security adviser: "We have not failed in Iraq...The President understands that we need to have a way forward in Irag that is more successful." Those antics would be funny if they weren't originating from people who are supposed to be governing us. While IDIOTS IN CHARGE will produce a fair share of belly-laughs, it will also produce lots of headshaking at the dim bulbs running this great nation of ours.
