I couldn't part with this after the class ended

Maybe it was just a great class, entertaining and knowledgeable professor (Dr. L. G. Thouin at Pierce College), or the subject matter, but I think the presentation of information, layout, and illustrations in the text helped keep me excited, motivated, and on top of a complex subject.

plethora of images aptly supplement the text

This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans. If you're looking for something that goes into more detail, more appropriate for a medical or professional bookshelf, I highly suggest checking out Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology. It is a book that will certainly be a great addition to the bookshelf of physicians and bioengineers alike.
