Cut Out Pages

I placed my order for this book for my classroom since I love the series. I received the book today and about 80 pages were cut out. They were missing a large square in the direct middle, making them unreadable. Please be careful what condition you order your books in.

Terrific series for boys

This is idea for 8-12 year old boys, with that crazy quirky sense of humor they are known for. :) My 9-year-old has read every book in the series at least 3 times, and can't wait for more! (My ONLY complaint is that the newer ones are available to the U.S. market in paperback only--we'd have preferred hardbacks.)

New life to the series

This latest work from Cressida Cowell breathes some new life into the series. I'm always pleased to see Camicazi back in the book, and love the opening device of an endurance swimming race. I'm a big fan of this series, and the idea of sending them across the Atlantic is a fun one. Your elementary school age children will love this book and the entire series!

Super Series - Buy Them All!

My 10-year-old son has been reading these books as fast as they are published since he was 7. I ordered this book when it first came out, and he read it in 2 days! This is true for all of Cowell's Hiccup books. What is amazing about this, is that my son is a VERY RELUCTANT reader. How to Ride A Dragon's Storm is book 6 in this series about a small Viking boy named Hiccup. Hiccup is the Viking heir, the son of the big brawny chief. But, Hiccup is small and brainy. He is also a bit of a "dragon-whisperer." Many of the people from his tribe/village do not think he will make a good leader. But Hiccup always proves them wrong. He solves problems and defeats the enemy using his brain, rather than brawn (which is the traditional Viking way to solve problems.) He is a non-traditional leader. This series encourages children to read and to be "brainy." It also emphasizes that everyone has different skills and encourages children to be themselves by using and developing their strengths. There are a few things in this book (and series) that, as a parent, I am not too thrilled about, such as the character, Big Boobed Bertha's, name. (I mean, is that name really necessary to the stories? Couldn't she have, just as easily, been named "Big-Boned Bertha," or "Big Bertha"?) But, my son loves this series so much, and I am so happy when he reads, that I am willing to overlook these things. A note of caution: My younger son does not enjoy these books at all. But then, he prefers realistic fiction, while my 10-year-old enjoys fantasy. He has also been interested in Vikings/Pirates/Knights/Gladiators/etc. since he was 4.

THE BEST SERIES EVER!!! FOR ALL AGES!

this series is the best for anyone...you can read it out of order, any day of the week!! I read a fair amount but ive read each of these books 3 or more times!! I'd recomend this book to anyone older then 4, no kidding!! Puff

It's not easy to make a book better than the last...

...but Cressida Cowell can do it! I have read and purchased every single one of her Dragon series books, including the imports and special titles not easily available in the United States, and I have loved them all! They just keep getting better and better, and that's not an easy task for an author. In fact, the very first book in the dragon series (How to Train Your Dragon) was my LEAST favorite! If you have read Cressida's other dragon books: look for more of your favorite characters, some really funny scenes with Fishlegs, Stoick the Vast, and Big-Boobied Bertha. You'll see some favorite old villains and get to accompany Hiccup on a journey to find "America." You'll meet some new characters and a frightening sea dragon (there is such an AWESOME picture of him on the front cover!!). You see Hiccup really grow up a lot in this story, and his true bravery shines through stronger than ever. If you have never read Cressida's books or only read a few: there is some crude humor here, farting jokes, booby jokes, so if that kind of thing offends you or your child, you might want to think twice. The sea dragon is described in scary detail, including its immense size and shooting poison from its mouth, so if you plan to read this to a youngster who might get nightmares, it might not be the best choice. And as always, I recommend reading her books in order, so start with the first one and read your way up to this one. But remember, out of all of her books, I found the first to be my least favorite, and I'm not really sure why that is. Last fact to know is that this is an import and it's paperback. I prefer buying her books in hardcover to add to my collection, but I couldn't wait for this one! Being an import, it contains some British slang and spelling that U.S. children might not understand at first, but nothing that would interfere with the story. I am an elementary school teacher and have read Cressida's stories aloud to my 2nd graders. If your child is too young to read this on his own, it will make a wonderful read aloud, too.
