Home Based Business Advice

Most people have a creative talent, even when they have not discovered it yet. When I was young, there seemed to be more time to devote to hobbies, and making things that were either useful or artistic, or just to see what could be make from what was easily available, for the fun of it. I remember my mother entertaining a group of Cub Scouts on our back porch with a small paring knife and a bar of Ivory soap, as she carved a white rose using an old brooch of hers as a model. The lesson was how to use a small knife safely to make something nice. This book recognizes this very human characteristic, to make things with our hands for fun, for use, or to express the artist inside. It does more. There are chapters on setting up a business space, working with other people, and separating your business life from your personal life. I have rated this book four stars because the chapter on using computers in your home based business is now out of date. No fault of the author. Technology has progressed so rapidly since 1994 that the computer chapter in this edition needs revision. Perhaps the author has written an updated version for this need. There is still much included that is valuable to the home based business person, about financial planning, bookkeeping, taxes, and especially marketing. Producing one's salable one-of-a-kind items is the fun part, the rest is really work. We all need help with finding customers, and with persuading a potential customer that our item is the one that is most desirable, at a fair price. There is also a chapter on sources for additional information. More people today are seeking a way to earn a living from home, for many very good reasons. This little book offers a fine place to begin the study of how to accomplish the most challenging aspects of that search. Well worth the price of the book.
