A Multitude of Ideas

I had found the third grader version of this book in my local library and enjoyed it so much that I purchased this book to prepare for my daughter's fourth grade year. I found it to be even better than the third grader version. I was concerned that it might contain "retread" information, but it definitely didn't. There are SO many ideas about how to encourage and enrich your child's reading, writing, and math education. I have tried some of the math games and tricks out on my children (9 & 7), and they have enjoyed all of them. I was also inspired to begin reading aloud to my children again. I had always done that until they became independent readers, and we all enjoy it. There are also many recommendation for books and ideas to do with your child while in a waiting room or checkout line. I can't wait to try more of the ideas.

I needed some answers

After a rocky year in fourth grade my husband and I were at our wits end as what to do with our fourth grader. She has loved school until this year Math in particular was my daughter's problem. The book, How is my fourth grader doing in school, certaintly helped shed some light on what should actually be expected from a student in this age bracket. Fourtunately, the book gives countless examples on how to "sneak" math in on the student. So they learn when they least expect it. Such as the baseball player hoave him figure out his batting average, etc. This summer our mission is to implement these suggestions with a summer math program to see if we can't get our daughter up to speed with her classmates. Teachers have lost some of the personal interest they once had in the students and just since your child isn't a threat to school doesn't mean their problems should be overlooked, some kids just don't learn the same way as others. I did enjoy the book and it does concentrate on the math and reading skills. It also gives wonderful reading books for kids to read over the summer. I am looking forward to using the assesment test that arrived with the book to determine whether our daughter goes to 5th grade or repeats fourth. Some times in a school environment children aren't taught to "critical think" mathematics this book certaintly helps in that area by giving literally dozens of uses of math in everyday life.
