Alanon: Help for those affected by another's drinking

This book may help lead you toward a peaceful life. I read a page of it almost ever morning, along with One Day at a Time in Alanon, and Courage to Change. I also go to Alanon meetings regularly. I suggest that if you feel affected by another's drinking, GO and check out Alanon. Even if you feel like "Why should I go? I don't have a problem!" That's how I felt, GO ANYWAY. You can google Alanon, and find a meeting in your area. There are also 800 numbers. There are NO dues or fees for membership (we are self supporting through our own voluntary contributions), and it is an anonymous program. We have a saying at meetings, "What you hear here, who you see here, when you leave here, let it stay here." Anonymity is sacred to members, so please don't let fear of "being recognized" scare you away. Alanon has helped to save my life. I went because I was at my wit's end: angry, frustrated, sad. Now, I have a life that I treasure. Take heart, for you can, too.

Hope for Today

The book is like a daily meditation, however, it allows you to search the index for a topic of need. It's another helpful tool and is small enough to carry along with you. The Twelve Steps are listed in the back for quick reference.

Al-Anon Diary

This book is excellent! Even if you are not dealing with alcoholism in your family or not married to an alcoholic, this book is written by some super smart people who explain how to deal with life My wife is an alcoholic and I just found out! She had hidden her drinking from me for over 10 years. I thought she was bipolar and had mental problems it got soooo bad. Then I made the discovery. And I found Al-Anon and I took her to AA. It's a long story chronicled in "Al-Anon Diary" blog type that into your search engine) - that is not-for-profit and is for recovery for spouses (men and women) dealing with alcoholism in a spouse, relative or friend. I would recommend that if you buy this book, that you read it from the Index and look at the topic you want to address (blame, hurt, worry, positive emotions, detachment, etc) and read each of the page long passages. I do NOT recommend reading the book from Front to Back. It does not read well that way, because the title is too Indirect and doesn't explain what topics the passage is addressing. So you can become confused and then frustrated and want to toss the book aside. Read these on day at a time books from the index is a great way to read these books and GET A WHOLE LOT of help from them. This book imparticular is just excellent. I use it in going to AL-Anon and in my Al-Anon Diary blog. This is where we have on-line interaction with others who cannot go to AL-Anon or don't want to go yet. Type in Al-Anon Diary into your search engine and you will find us there and a review of this book and others!

Great resouce!

Very helpful book for those who had an alcoholic influence on their childhood. My favorite of all the Al-Anon books so far!
