When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Kate didn't wallow in self-pity or a sea of depression when her husband left her. Instead, she admirably established her independence and found a meaningful purpose for life, helping homeless people, turning her life aorund for the better! I think that although I am not generally a prejudice or judgement person, a part of me has considered homeless people to be in their predicament by their own laziness, unwillingness to work or substance abuse. This book certainly gave strong insight into the plight of regular people who became homeless due to no fault of their own, such as losing the family farm because of the economy. No matter how hard they work to overcome their homeless situation, there are so many obsticles, particularly bureaucratic ones, that knock them down. If it wasn't for the kindness of strangers, and someone willing to give them a chance, they couldn't break out of their situation. Their struggles cause a strain on family dynamics and broken spirits. I appreciate how this book opened my eyes to the other side of the story, and showed an aspect of homelessness that I might not have considered before. Who would have thought that this little book would have dealt with such a heavy social issue in such a light-hearted way? Makes me want to go out and perform as many random acts of kindness as I can!
