HIS BEST FRIEND'S BABY by Molly O'Keefe November 26, 2006 Rating **** (4 Stars) FAMILY AT STAKE was the first novel that Molly O'Keefe penned under the Harlequin Superromance line of books. In HIS BEST FRIEND'S BABY, she follows up with the story of Jesse Filmore, the younger brother to Rachel who was featured in FAMILY AT STAKE. Jesse could not understand why his older sister ran away all those years ago, leaving him behind with an abusive parent. Now, it's many years later and Jesse has just returned from Iraq without the friends that went with him to fight in the war. He's still angry with Rachel, who finally returned home and is now married, and he still refuses to have anything to do with her. He feels he can never forgive her. On top of that, he's dealing with the death of his friends, blaming himself for what happened. Jesse hides in his house, angry with himself and the world. Julia is the widow of Mitch Adams, one of the friends who had died in Iraq and had fought beside Jesse. Unlike the rest of the small desert town of New Springs, California, Julia is not angry with Jesse for what happened to Mitch. In fact, she's anything but angry. She knows Jesse, and she trusts that he was not to blame. What the townspeople don't know is that Mitch was far from the perfect man they make him out to be, and Jesse understands the turmoil Julia went through in her short marriage to Mitch. Despite their common bond, Jesse wants nothing to do with Julia because he's in love with her, and the guilt over Mitch's death isn't being helped by being in love with Mitch's widow. Julia has had feelings for Jesse since she first met him, but she never followed through with her feelings for him while married to Mitch. Now that she's alone with a two-year-old son, she is willing to follow her heart. She needs Jesse, just as she knows he needs her. However, her first priority is to her son and what she needs to do to support him. She's swallowed her pride and has accepted financial help from her in-laws, despite the fact that they never approved of her in the past. She is hoping that living with them will bring some stability to her son's life, something she never knew, being born into a military family. This reviewer enjoyed HIS BEST FRIEND'S BABY. One will find the story behind the deaths of Jesse's friends absorbing, building up slowly until it is finally revealed exactly what happened to the men in Iraq. The various plot lines will keep the readers engaged, but it's the characters that will pull the readers in. Both Julia and Jesse are two very charismatic characters that create tension throughout the novel. Readers may question why Julia would give up a chance given to her by her in-laws to go to college, all expenses paid, but if one looks more deeply, one will understand that it is her pride and her need to be self-reliant that drives her. Also, going to college would have forced her to be indebted to her in-laws, who had only ridiculed and taun
