A triumphant tale of survival

A rare and insightful book about the courage and will to survive despite all odds. Ami and his brother grew up in war torn Nazi Germany to parents who didn't deserve to have children. They were starved and neglected by their mother, all but abandoned by their wealthy father, then sold into slavery to their uncles in the United States. Due to the difficulties and extreme trauma experienced by Ami and his brother some parts are hard to read. However, the reader will be engaged by the story of how one man was able to overcome unthinkable abuse to his body, mind and spirit, emerging as a man with the desire to help others find their way out of the darkness and into the light. A triumphant tale of survival and a book well worth reading.

Incredible perseverance and patience lessons for us all

This book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. A fascinating story that should be required reading for high schools. Not only is it a history lesson but an example of how strong a child's spirit can be.

Beyond Abuse is Triumph!

This memoir cronicles a lifetime. Though it talks about the abuse Ami and his brother faced growing up in Nazi Germany, and later at the hands of uncles in America, what bursts into the fore are the courage, spirit, and no-quit attitudes they developed to achive their American dreams. That this author believes in hard work and not handouts is obvious through the humorous shots he takes at some of the liberal stances in America. Without a doubt, this ranks among the best memoirs I have ever read because it doesn't focus solely on the grim, but on the metal of two young men who battled through their obstacles to triumph. I strongly recommend this book.

Eventually, Herman and Siggi were shipped to relatives in America and there found themselves forced to a life of constant labor in a kind of virtual slavery on separate farms. Their courage, and all-out drive to put themselves through college, earn their freedom, and establish a decent living characterizes this powerfully written and uniquely recommended memoir.
