Going Some Place: Creative Non-Fiction Across Canada

Going Some Place is a compilation of what the editor describes as creative non-fiction, including autobiographical stories, travel tales, and memoirs. Twenty-five Canadian authors share a bit of themselves in this three part anthology. Section one is titled A Honeycomb of Memory. This section name is taken from Louise Bernice Halfe's tale of the same title in which the author shares her memories and frustrations of being both of Inuit origin and being a Canadian. Part two is likewise named for one of the entries, A Question of Identity by Nigel Darbasie. This piece is a narrative that discusses the multicultural nature of Canadian culture, both on the surface and at a slightly deeper, more edgy level. The final section, Breathing Spaces, is named after Merilyn Simonds work. This touching piece uses the symbol, voice, and rhythm of the breathing machine to share a very personal experience of death and dying. Unlike many of these types of anthologies, I actually got a little something out of each of these stories. After reading each piece, I felt strangely connected to the author and like I had grown as a person.
