if you need it.. get it..

This book is really good if your teacher is "incapable" of teaching you. while there are words that are used that are not defined, those are few and far between. If your teacher requires it get it. If you want to learn statistics on your own get it.

It depends on how you learn...

If you are the type of person that goes home after class and wishes that someone could show you how to do new math that has just been presented (or that you thought you understood in class but now you are confused again, than this is the pack for you. My friend loved the CD-roms because she said that it helped her to understand the material from a different perspective and the speaker goes slowly. You also get a solutions manual with answers to the problems in the book. That's really helpful if you are like me and while you are doing your homework, you really want to know the answer to something to see if you are understanding it correctly.

Great book, mediocre supplemental materials

The heart of this pack, the textbook, is excellent. Fundamental formulas and derivations are laid out in detail, and the quantity and variety of examples and exercises is unsurpassed. Beyond the textbook, the other materials in this package are less useful. The prevalent problem with technology manuals is that they are doomed to be obsolete within a few years if not months. The help function in Excel is a better source for current 'how to' level detail on using software for statistical analysis. The solutions manual provides solutions to some of the end of chapter problems, but this is of negligible use because of all the solved examples in the main text.

Solid introduction to statistics-focused on data & pedagogy

This very nicely done text is designed as a one-semester version of Prof. Sullivan's "Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data" for an introductory course in basic statistics. As you might surmise from the larger text's title, an important emphasis is gathering and understanding how to use data. Making sense of data using statistics has to be founded on the notion that the data you have are good and meaningfully representative of the thing you are analyzing. I like Prof. Sullivan's emphasis on the importance of sound data collection and analysis. The book also has many pedagogical helps and suggestions for keeping students' interest. It is a very practical book for the classroom and has many helps for the instructor to keep things understandable. The writing is clear and stays away from complicated language. There are many illustrations, good use of color to enhance clarity and not just for eye candy. Not only are there the usual tables, there are pull out tables and formula sheets so the student can use them without having to flip back to the back of the book. Answers to the odd-numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study and there is a useful index. The text also includes a CD with content and movie clips on "Six Steps to Overcoming Math Anxiety". So, you see this really is a text for general students getting a foundation in basic statistics rather than high-flying quants.
