Best software book I've ever read

Ulrich does a great job of explaining the complexities of Flash--she covers the necessities and then some. Easy to read with good examples. A great book for beginners or intermediates.

Best "Getting Started" book I've read in a long time

I had to buy this as the textbook for a class. At first, I thought a visual quickstart wasn't going to be good enough, so I also ordered an extra book that I thought would be better. But when I read this book, it was surprisingly good. It got me up and running much quicker than most of the other students in the class. (Granted, many of the students probably didn't bother to read any book.)I came to appreciate this book all the more when I read the other book I ordered, "How to Do Everything with Macromedia Flash 5." In my opinion, this Visual Quickstart Guide is by far the better book. Some of the other reviews say this book is not comprehensive enough. True. If you really want to get into the guts of Flash 5, you'll need more. But if you just want to get started, and learn a hell of a lot of useful information along the way, you can't beat this book.P.S. Be sure to go to their Web site and download the example files.

This is a Great Book; Don't let anyone tell you it's not

In general, I feel that all the Visual Quickstart Books are excellent. I have a growing library myself. With the Flash 5 Book the reading is easy. There aren't any long, attention-drifting-away paragraphs. You could look at the examples and experiment with them to fit your needs. For example, I used an exercise in Animating Color Effects to teach myself how to make text that fades in and out. The best thing about these books is that they are 100% proofread.Yeah, some people complain that the books are too simplistic. I say to those 1) What more do you want? These books give a wealth of information for under $25 and 2) quit trying to come off as an expert user of Flash/Photoshop/etc...The Bottom Line is that these are great books.

The Perfect Book

As an individual who possessed a minor knowledge of Flash seeking to learn more I found the book "Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh" to be the perfect book. Whether you have no knowledge of Flash 5 and are just starting out or have a good basic understanding and wish to advance to an intermediate level this book is the perfect learning tool.Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh is easy to follow, very instructional, well written, well structured and chock full of information on the broad scope of Flash functions. This book does not leave you guessing about what is being taught, and even after finishing with Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh it remains an excellent resource for commands and instructions that I refer to over and over again.I highly recommend this book for anyone beginning in Flash 5 or those who wish to advance their skills to an intermediate level.

a very good introduction to flash

I bought this book because it was one of the few available for Flash 5. After working with it for several days I find it one of the best introductory books I have come across for any topic. Flash is a quirky and complicated program, and there are times I would have liked more explanations. But I am so happy that the useful information in this book is not buried in pages of useless examples. This is not a book of samples, ready for you to copy. Nor does it cover advanced scripting topics very well - these could easily double the size of the book. This book is a concise handbook, and an excellent introduction for those that do not require a great deal of hand holding.
