Rescuing the princess

The second volume of "Flame of Recca" ended with Yanagi being kidnapped, along with the new ninja-obsessed schoolteacher. And the third volume of this action-comedy series takes us into darker territory, as Recca and his little band set out to rescue his "princess." New enemies and unexpected allies crop up, but most of the focus is on the one-on-one battles with talisman users -- and the hints about Recca's increasingly murky past. Recca wakes up in the hospital, with Fuko and Domon telling him that Yanagi has been kidnapped. The only person who can help him find Yanagi is the mysterious Kageoshi, who is afraid for Recca but reluctantly tells him where to find "princess." Yanagi, meanwhile, has woken to find herself at the mercy of masked madman Kurei, who says that his father wants to use her healing powers to attain immortality. Then Recca, Domon and Fuko infiltrate Kurei's mansion, and find themselves battling an invincible puppetmaster, a golem-like psychopath, and a statue that shoots deadly lasers. The trio use their powers and talismans to defeat the obstacles -- but they don't realize that they're being tracked by an unexpected ally. And Recca has no idea of the secret connection between himself and Kurei... The third volume of "Flame of Recca" really shoots the plot sky-high. Suddenly we've got a "Yu Yu Hakusho" string of individual fights, all linked together by a main bad guy's obsession with Recca and a mysterious tribe of medieval ninja. It's pretty obvious early on what that connection is, but it promises to only get more interesting as time goes on. And the fights are pretty good -- lots of drippy blood and flashy talisman usage, as well as a rather oblique sword fight near the end. But there's a darker vein in this story, with the crazed grin of Kurei behind his creepy mask, and his casual handling of murder, torture and kidnapping. The scene where he casually tosses a severed head at Recca is pretty creepy. But there are moments of humor as well, such as the eager-puppy behavior of boy warrior Kaoru, or the entertaining dialogue ("He's a huge, psychotic mass-murderer! Kurei thought he'd make a good security guard"). And our dim-yet-loyal spiky-haired hero is pretty clearly revving up for a good confrontation with Kurei, but Domon and Fuko are the ones who really get to shine in this one. Fuko gets to show how strong and yet kind she really is, and Domon gets to do serious battle for the first time, as well as showing that he's not quite the fight-loving ogre he appears to be. The third "Flame of Recca" volume amps up the action and fantasy another notch, and the story only promises to get more interesting. A nice little action-comedy, if you don't mind crazed firestarters.
