Excellent resource

Their are very few texts for nursing informatics. This particular book is excellent for faculty and students to discuss the various aspects of informatics. Chapters on theory and issues are comprehensive. There are also chapters applying informatics to nursing administration, education, and research. Of particular interest to me is the section on international perspectives. I particulary like that experts in the field were used to write chapters. Solid text.

Great book for future informatics professionals, understanding the field, and a reference book

This book was required for my first semester of the MSN at Vanderbilt in Nursing Informatics. It provided an excellent overview of the field of informatics. Not only did it cover Informatics Nursing in the United States, but it gave valuable information on the field and progress in other countries. Of most importance, it serves as a reference to professional organizations and structures worldwide. Saba & McCormick do a great job of blending medical informatics with Nursing. They give invaluable information about clinical, private sector, and governmental systems requirements. For students lacking a coding background, they give great information on what that is and why it is important, and what various systems are used where and why. There is a strong and appropriate focus on electronic medical records (EMRs) and personal health records (PHRs). The authors present why the US lags behind in such an important field. With President Bush having funded this seminal issue after visiting Vanderbilt, setting up a special ombudsman position, and President Obama promising to fund this field and jobs at higher levels, Informatics Nurses have an important role in putting us back on course. Throughout the program, I found myself going back to reference Saba & McCormick as a professional standard and basis for other knowledge. The back cover review listed here provides a good overview of what is inside at the basic level. Trust me: for someone planning to enter Informatics Nursing as a new professional, those things are essential, important, and they'll find the value in reading about them from experienced professionals such as Saba & McCormick! Now that I've graduated, I appreciate the book and keep it on my desk! I highly recommend it, and that future students understand why this material is important to the Nursing profession, even if Informatics is not 'their gig.' Nursing Informatics, as the book explains, has a role in research, evidence-based practice, cost control, and quality improvement: all things this book clearly explains and the student MUST understand in order to make Nursing better and help the patient!

Easy to understand

I had recently joined the nursing informatics team. As a newbie with no qualification on this job whatsoever, this book had helped me in understanding the nature of this career. Good for beginners.
