A fantasy romance which really is enchanting, and mainstream

This delightful little fantasy story is NOT like most of the other books by the same author. It stands out from most of her other fantasy and space opera work in that it is pitched firmly for a mainstream readership. Some of Sharon Green's early novels, such as the Jalav series ("An Oath to Mida" et seq) and the Terillian series ("The Warrior Within" etc) were promoted by the publishers with slogans like "If you like John Norman, you will like Sharon Green." If you did like Sharon Green's other books because the heroines were often treated like a Gorean slave girl, frequently with sex scenes which ranged from the kinky to outright S/M, give this one a miss. I'm not surprised that the other reviews include comments from people who liked those books but found this one tame. Equally, if you didn't like that aspect of many Sharon Green books you will probably find "Enchanting" more to your taste. There isn't anything here which would be out of place in a Mills & Boon or Silhouette romance novel, except that it is rather funnier and better written than the majority of the books they publish. The heroine of this book, Deanne, writes bestselling fantasy novels. Her most successful character is a barbarian mercenary called Tarren. Unfortunately, in another universe there really is a mercenary captain called Tarren. And every time Deanne publishes a book, Tarren is seized by a mad fit which forces him to act out the book. Inter alia this means Tarren has to replace his practical soldier's garb with a fantasy outfit which isn't much more than a breechcloth and swordbelt, and get into ludicrously dangerous adventures which nearly get himself and most of his company killed. Realising that something is wrong, Tarren goes to a wizard and asks to meet the person responsible for his fits of madness. Both he and Deanne are in for a shock ... I found this book very entertaining, and it is one of the few Sharon Green books which I would not have to be careful who I recommended it to.

A great combination of fantasy and romance

I've read most of Sharon Green's novels, and found this book to be one of her best. She deftly combines elements of fantasy and romance into a mixture everyone can enjoy. Unlike some of her earlier romance fiction, these characters and plots are more complex, and the situations are often comical. Should she write a sequel, I would be first in line to buy it!
