SUCH great novels!!

Edna Ferber's novels are in a class alone. They take you into the very soul of some of the most surprising, seldom-treated times and places in American history and make them so real you can almost smell the logging camp, the decaying New England mansion, the Chicago farmers' market before daybreak, the muddy Mississippi of "Showboat". Last year I unearthed my old six-book Ferber set that was stored in the attic for lack of shelf space after a move, and brought them downstairs. A few nights later I picked up "American Beauty" for the first time in ~40 years, and rather regretted it the next day because I read almost through the night. I reread the other five in short order and was so taken with them all over again I pressed three of them on each of my two 18 year-old granddaughters, and they devoured them!! They swapped with each other and both finished all six. (Sadly missing from this volume is the aforementioned "American Beauty" , my personal favorite. But I must be the exception, since it was apparently less popular than the others. Try to find a copy just to round out the Ferber experience. It is an utterly mesmerizing story.)
