Hughes-Calero may like exotic names, dresses and wish-fulfilling gems, yet one should not be distracted by these accoutrements and mannerisms of a modern shaman - she knows what she is talking about and she talks about it well. This book is a compilation of her talks for her "advanced students". They address issues from perception to health and professional success....not to mention more esoteric topics that deal with the energy body, life force and astral contacts. Hughes-Calero has in my opinion succeeded in seemlessly integrating Buddhist ideas and teachings (especially Dzogchen/Mahamudra) with those of native americans; the main draw for me is their practicality and pragmatism... "If you can't grow corn with it, leave it alone" philosophy. This book is not for everyone. Yet those, willing to work hard will find it useful.

When the Student Is Ready

If the title of this book triggers in you the desire to know and to tap into a world of psychic phenomena and "other worldly" experiences, you will be disappointed. As Shaman and Teacher the author understands that before you enter graduate school to obtain your doctorate, you must first master all of the steps that are required for you to get there ie: Developing the power to master one's self and to live your full potential as a contributer to the world you live in. If, after having done that, you are still interested in exploring the other, you will then be equipped to do so. That is what this book is to me. A text book for awakening to my Divinity and for developing the skills that benefit myself and others.

A Great Beginning

A refreshing book that is a fast read for those of us who get "STUCK" spiritually every now and then. When you read this, it is as if you are sitting in on the class giving by the spiritual teacher. I liked that you don't have to read this book cover to cover to get something out of it. You can jump around and find something that will help you or a friend "get it". I like to refer to it regularly for balance. It is a must read for those of you who are on a search for knowlege and a positive outlook. I gave this book to several friends, they all enjoyed it and felt that it had helped them move forward spiritually. I call it the "Green Bible". It is a great start for a spiritual quest.
