powerful post-Regency that will stir your emotions......

This is my first book by this author and definitely not my last. I do not normally read Romances that involve the "half breed" aspect because I find them to stereotype and degrade the race. I'm glad I gave this one a chance. Ms. Becnel did not degrade or dehumanize Ivan's half Romany heritage, but treated it with respect and candor. The story is very passionate and quite emotional. I also found myself crying at several parts-which is unusual for me. I agree with the other reviewers about Ivan's dysfunctional treatment of Lucy towards the end. It was hard to read but I found it was realistic in this story as Ivan was truly ABUSED, not just neglected-but beaten and tortured for ten years of his childhood. It was also realistic that Lucy should continue to stay with him-she was quite well read on the burgeoning field of psychology and realized that Ivan's behavior stemed from very deep seated fear, anger and his abandonment by every adult in his life. I do wish Ivan's emotional "rebirth" would have happened sooner in the story, but I would still recommended this dramatic, highly sensual and intelligent romance to fans looking for a more substantial storyline. 5 stars.

WOW!

I found it hard to put this book down and get some sleep. Very well written. This was the first book by this author that I have read and I went out and bought some more of her books. The character were mature (28 yrs old) and very sexy. the hero was hard but you couldn't help but care about him. And the heroine hung in there and didn't run off like so many of them do. She gave him what he needed and he finally realized he was loved and he could love. An added plus was that the love scenes were fantastic. I needed time to recover when I finished this book, it did bring tears to my eyes. Don't miss out!

Best romance novel I've read in a while

Whew. This book was GOOD. I've been trying to find new authors because most of my favorite authors are now becoming "mainstream," and I may just add Becnel to my must read list. I agree with the reviewer who said the book was a tad long--it could have ended a bit sooner, but the end is well done. Bravo.

Worth Reading Over and Over Again

This is one of the best Regency books I have yet to read. My poor book is entirely battered, and beaten up from being taken everywhere and read over and over again. The plot was superb. The Characters sizzled. My only tiny complaint was that it was a bit long. crossing my fingers for some sort of sequel. :o) Hope you pick up and enjoy.

One of her best!

All I can say is, wow. This is one of her best books, and that's saying a lot. :) Ivan wants to get back at his grandmother for stealing him from his family and putting him in a hellhole for bastards to make him become more "proper." Her greatest wish is for him to marry and carry on the family name/line, so he decides to woo society maidens, then spurn them cruelly. His grandmother believes she's outsmarted him, however, with scholar Lucy and the grandmother's very beautiful niece Valerie, whom Lucy is chaperoning. She pretends to refuse to allow Ivan near the two women for the express purpose of sparking his anger into taking one of them, but Ivan catches on to her plan. However, his attention is honestly turned to Lucy, and he pursues her even as she tries desperately to run away. Can Ivan ever love after being betrayed so much in his past, as Lucy wants, or will she have to accept only his adoration and lust?I recommend this one. I'm not a big name in any business, but I loved this book a lot. It's on my keeper shelf, and it gets pulled down a lot so I can reread scenes that are my favorites. :) You'll really love this book, I can promise that. All of Rexanne Becnel's books are must-reads, and this one is DEFINITELY no exception. :-)Sarah Pearson
