"BeYourself!" - Excellent Message for Young Girls!

I read this book when I was 11 and dealing with a lot of the same garbage as the character, Claudia. I love this book, and would recommend it highly for young girls. I would also recommend this book for parents who might think there's something "wrong" with their kid - it's a story about a normal young girl who's in no hurry to grow up and just wants to be herself. I completely disagree with the reviewer who thought Claudia might have Aspergers - how ridiculous! Why try to put a label on a kid just becuse they don't quite fit in? This happened to me at 11 years old, and my parents had me tested. Guess what? I was just a normal kid trying to have fun. Adults are always bemoaning the fact that kids want to grow up too soon, but it's the adults who are most responsible for this phenomenon, pushing kids to be "mature" etc. Again, this is a great book for kids & adults alike. Claudia is a terrific girl!

Loved it as a kid

I remember this book too. At the very end, there was something about pink whales and green lollipops. There were wonderful characters like Duffy, Lonnie and Maurice. Claudia helping that lady with her kids. I loved this book.

30 Years later and I still remember loving it!

I too remember reading this book somewhere around the 5th grade (could've been 4th or 6th). I remember taking it out of the library multiple times. I can still picture today the exact spot on the shelf where it was kept and the green cover with Claudia on the front. I must have read it at least 4 or 5 times. I was a tomboy myself growing up and was so happy to find someone fictional or otherwise who seemed like me. Claudia was one of the first steps in helping me accept myself exactly the way I was and not to feel so bad about not fitting in.

The Perfect Tomboy Tale

I read this book back in 5th grade, too and really loved it...Claudia and I were in the same boat back then! Now that I teach, I read it each year to my 4th graders. It's an nice little history lesson on the old gender and peer roles parents used to assign to us and all my kids can relate to the despair of being picked on, or having your friends change and mature around you before you're ready to.

CLAUDIA

I first read this book as a fifth grader back in the 1970's. It helped me then to understand that other kids had problems, just like I did, and that we could find viable solutions to our problems without relying on others.Claudia would be good for fourth-seventh graders to read independently, or for a read-aloud to second and third graders. Many life skills are addressed along with applying them through family and friends.
