Good Book for Beginning Readers - a review of the "Calico Cat a School"
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This is our first book from the Calico Cat series but it won't be our last. My children (boy and girl: 3.5 and 5.5) found it interesting and it has proven to be a good book for my beginning readers. In fact, I would say that this would be a good book for young children like my nearly 4 year-old that want to 'pretend' reading (really what they are doing is practicing their reading skills). The pictures are colorful, and generally run across two whole pages. The text is simple and ranges from 1 to 3 lines. The vocabulary includes words such as time, ring, get, to, up, late, school, time, day, start, learn, read, write and eat. The more difficult words are: Calico Cat, lunchtime, picture, quiet, listens and storytime. Though the vocabulary is extensive, I recommend this for beginners and pre-beginners because the text is so repetitive and simple (words correspond to pictures) that even a three year old can memorize the words and practice reading. Definitely a confidence boost. Five Stars. (Especially at these prices!) In this book Calico Cat goes to school and does school things with his mouse buddies and other animal friends, like the pledge, lunch, drawing, writing, etc. Text is simple and drawings are bright and attractive. See below for examples of text from several pages so you can judge the reading level for yourself. Time to get up. Don't be late for school. "Here I am on time," says Calico Cat. Start the day. Learn to read. Learn to write.
